Custom engagement rings at Filigree start from one of three places: a design in the By Filigree collection, a mounting you already own, or a concept with no ring behind it yet. How Do Custom Engagement Rings Work at Filigree?
Every ring in the By Filigree engagement ring collection is newly made, designed and built in-house. The designs draw construction ideas from vintage and estate pieces: milgrain detail, gallery work, proportions learned from decades of handling antique rings. The range covers antique cuts like Old European and Old Mine, geometric forms and bezel settings, and classic solitaires and three-stone rings.
Starting from a By Filigree design gives you a finished ring that is one of one, ready to buy as shown. It can also serve as the basis for something new. If you like a setting shown with an Old European Cut but want an oval, or you prefer a colored gemstone where the original has a white diamond, that kind of change is part of how the collection works. Modifying an existing mounting works when you already have a ring and want to change the center stone or adjust the gallery or the shank. That path depends on the mounting itself. Some settings take a different stone with little rework. Others were built around a particular stone shape and size. Changing the center stone may require work on the surrounding setting.
Full custom is the path when no existing design gets you where you need to be. It runs from an initial concept through a finished ring. Your preferences for stone, metal, proportions, and detail work drive the design. We develop it from reference photos and conversation.

Can an Existing Engagement Ring Be Modified?
The center stone sets the scale for everything else on the ring. Most mountings were built around a specific stone size.
Antique mountings need careful assessment. Some antique rings are delicate or carry structural limits that make a center stone change impractical. An antique ring may also have details you want to keep. Before settling on a new center stone, separate the changes you want from the features that drew you to the ring in the first place. The original construction was made for one stone. Working around that means knowing what the mounting can and cannot take. We walk you through the options for your ring.
When a mounting cannot take the change you want, there are other paths forward. A By Filigree design that echoes the original ring's look can be built for your preferred center stone. You keep the design language you were drawn to without altering an antique piece. For a ring with personal meaning, carrying one detail from the original into a new design is another option: a milgrain pattern, a shoulder treatment, a gallery element. Mark those in your reference photos so you can talk through which ones might carry over.

How Does a Full Custom Ring Take Shape?
Reference photos are a useful starting point for a full custom project. They carry detail that descriptions miss.
Photos from anywhere are useful: rings you have seen online, vintage pieces, a friend's ring. What matters is the one detail in each image that caught your eye. You might pull a prong style from one photo, a band profile from another, and a gallery detail from a third. We use those references to work out which elements belong in the finished ring. A photo shows a result, not the construction behind it. Some combinations need changes to proportions or construction to work on a hand. If you want a low profile and a larger stone, those two goals pull the design in different directions. We talk through the trade-offs as we develop the design. Bring more photos than you feel you need, including the rings you only half-like.
The center stone is the other major variable. Its dimensions become the fixed reference point for everything else. Shape, size, and cut affect design choices such as prong style, band taper, and how much metal shows around the stone. They also change how the ring sits on the finger. Compare how much of the stone you want visible from above against how much you want visible in profile. Pick the stone first and we build the setting to its exact dimensions.

What Happens During the Custom Design Process?
The North Loop showroom is where you see stones and ring details up close. A first conversation can also happen over video.
Bring reference photos, notes on the details that matter to you, and the ring itself if you are considering a modification. Those give the first conversation its shape. The consultation covers your design direction, metal choice, and any lifestyle factors that affect how the ring has to be built. If you are not sure where to start, narrowing by the style you already wear and picking pieces from the By Filigree collection that appeal to you is a practical first step. That conversation helps clarify which of the three paths fits. If you own rings that already fit well, bring those too. They help with proportions and comfort.
Stone selection follows. We review natural diamonds and colored gemstones from current inventory, looking at stones in person where possible. Seeing one in person is how you judge it across different light. If the right stone is not available, we find options for you to compare.
Some custom projects need computer-aided design renderings. Others do not. We make that call based on how complex the design is. When renderings are used, they show the ring's proportions and prong placement. You review and approve the design before creation begins. For simpler designs, or for changes worked closely off an existing model, renderings may not be needed at all.
After design approval, creation takes about 45 days depending on complexity. Hand-engraving, detailed pave work, or metalwork with multiple parts can extend that. We confirm a timeline for your project once we agree on the design.
