About
Round Brilliant Cut Engagement Rings
Q: What GIA cut grades should I look for in a round brilliant?
Excellent is the highest GIA cut grade and the standard benchmark for a well-performing round brilliant. Very Good is one step below and produces results most people can't distinguish from Excellent in normal lighting. Good and below represent meaningful trade-offs in light performance. For round brilliants, cut grade is the most important of the four Cs because it directly determines how well the stone returns light. A well-cut H color diamond will outperform a poorly cut D color stone in most lighting conditions.
Q: What is the difference between a modern round brilliant and an old European cut?
Both are round with 58 facets, but the proportions are different. Modern round brilliants have a lower crown, a larger table, and a pointed culet (invisible from above). Old European cuts have a higher crown, a smaller table, and a visible culet you can see as a circle when looking straight down through the stone. The practical difference is light behavior: modern rounds are optimized for overhead lighting and produce rapid, uniform sparkle. Old European cuts were cut for candlelight and produce broader, warmer flashes. Neither is objectively better; they produce different results in different lighting conditions.
Q: Why do round brilliant diamonds cost more than other shapes?
Two factors drive the premium. First, round brilliants have the highest demand of any diamond shape, which keeps prices elevated. Second, cutting a round brilliant from rough diamond wastes more material than cutting a fancy shape. Fancy shapes like ovals and cushions follow the natural contours of the rough more efficiently, so more of the original stone ends up in the finished diamond. The manufacturing inefficiency of round brilliants is built into their price.
Q: What is the difference between a solitaire and a halo setting for a round brilliant?
A solitaire features the center diamond with no surrounding stones. A halo setting surrounds the center stone with a frame of smaller diamonds. Solitaires put all the visual focus on the quality and size of the center stone. Halos increase the perceived visual size of the center stone and add overall sparkle to the ring, but the center diamond is less prominent. Halos also make it harder to reset or change the center stone later because the surrounding stones are fitted specifically around it.
