About
Old European & Old Mine Cut Diamonds
Q: What is the difference between an old European cut and an old mine cut diamond?
Old European cuts are round and roughly symmetrical, with 58 facets, a high crown, a small table, and a visible culet. They were the dominant round diamond cut from the late 1800s through the early 1930s. Old mine cuts are older, typically cushion-shaped rather than round, with even less symmetry and broader, chunkier facets. Both were cut entirely by hand, but old mine cuts tend to show more variation from stone to stone because the cutters were working with less standardized proportions. In practice, the easiest way to tell them apart is the outline: old European cuts are circular, old mine cuts are squarish with soft corners.
Q: How do old European cut diamonds compare to modern round brilliants?
The biggest difference is how they handle light. Modern round brilliants have 57 or 58 precisely calibrated facets designed to maximize white-light return under overhead lighting. Old European cuts have the same facet count but broader, less uniform facets that produce larger, warmer flashes of light rather than rapid-fire sparkle. The high crown and open culet also give old European cuts more depth and a different visual weight on the hand. Neither is objectively better. Modern cuts are brighter in a jewelry store. Old European cuts tend to look more interesting in natural light, candlelight, and the kind of mixed lighting you actually live in.
Q: Are old European cut diamonds a good value compared to modern diamonds?
Generally, yes. Old European cuts often cost less per carat than equivalent modern round brilliants at the same color and clarity grade, partly because the cut grade on GIA reports penalizes the proportions of antique stones (they were cut for a different aesthetic, not for the GIA scale). That said, the market has tightened. These stones are a finite resource, and demand from both collectors and jewelers who reset antique diamonds into new mountings has pushed prices up over the past several years. Particularly clean, well-proportioned old European cuts above 1.5 carats are harder to source now than they were five years ago.
Q: Can old European cut diamonds be GIA certified?
Yes. GIA grades old European cut diamonds using the same criteria as modern stones: carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. The difference is that old European cuts will almost always receive a lower cut grade because GIA's cut scale is calibrated to modern round brilliant proportions. A beautifully cut old European that looks fantastic on the hand might receive a "Fair" or "Good" cut grade simply because its crown is higher and its table is smaller than what GIA considers ideal. This is normal and expected. When evaluating an old European cut, color and clarity grades are reliable, but the cut grade tells you more about the era the stone was cut in than about the quality of the cutting itself.
