Paraiba tourmaline is a copper-bearing form of the mineral elbaite, with copper supplying the color that iron or manganese gives to most of the rest of the family.

The 2006 standard defines it as a blue, blue-green to green tourmaline colored "due to the presence of copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) of whatever geographical origin." Seven member labs, among them GIA and Gubelin, issued that wording to close a long argument over whether the name belonged only to Brazilian material or to any gem with the right chemistry. By deciding in favor of chemistry and adopting identical language, the labs gave one gem the same name on any of their reports.

Copper (Cu2+) is the main color agent, and several hundred parts per million are needed before the "neon" look appears. GIA puts the gap between sources in plain numbers: Brazilian material holds about 11,400 ppm copper by weight; African material stays below 2,000.

Manganese (Mn2+/Mn3+) plays the second role by pulling the hue toward violet or pink. Its balance with copper sets where a gem falls on the blue-to-green range. Without enough copper, the result is ordinary pink or purple elbaite.

Brazil produced the first Paraiba tourmaline in 1989, followed by Nigeria around 2001, Mozambique in the early 2000s, and Ethiopia as of August 2026.

Heitor Dimas Barbosa began digging in the hills of Paraiba state in the early 1980s, although sources put the start at either 1981 or 1982. The rest is consistent across accounts: early finds between 1985 and 1987, a clear copper-bearing elbaite in autumn 1989, and a public debut at the 1990 Tucson Gem Show. Barbosa died in 2023 at age 90 (GIA, Gems & Gemology, Winter 2023).

Nigeria's copper-bearing rough reached the trade around 2000 to 2001. Material from Mozambique's Alto Ligonha mines appeared as early as 2001, two years before its copper content was confirmed, although parcels did not sell widely under a stated Mozambique origin until 2005 (GIA, Gems & Gemology, Spring 2008).

In August 2026, GIA and the Gubelin Gem Lab both confirmed Ethiopia as the fourth source after trade circles reported the find near Abuloo village in the Shakiso area that May. Its trace-element profile carries higher levels of lead, gallium, and vanadium than the other three sources, with lead and gallium among the six elements a standard origin test measures.

Paraiba's scarcity comes from deposit size and mining history. The often-cited claim that one Paraiba exists for every ten thousand diamonds has no traceable primary source. No mine-production study, lab dataset, or published record backs that ratio.

Brazil's deposit in Paraiba state is largely mined out, and the crystals it gave up were small enough that a Brazilian gem above two or three carats counts as large. Most of the Paraiba reaching the market today comes from Mozambique, where the deposits are larger. Although output data from Ethiopia is still thin, field reports from the Shakiso area describe several thousand people working the site.

Only a handful of deposits hold copper-bearing elbaite at all. A lab report lets a buyer check identity, origin, and treatment.

How Can You Tell If a Paraiba Tourmaline Is Real?

Confirming a Paraiba takes a lab test because a loupe can show inclusions and facet edges but gives no reading on copper content, the measurement the Paraiba name turns on.

GIA's method uses LA-ICP-MS, a laser-based test that measures six trace elements: copper, strontium, lead, gallium, zinc, and tin. Its reference dataset covers 151 Brazilian, 133 Mozambican, and 17 Nigerian samples. Copper content confirms the variety and separates Brazilian material from African, while the full six-element profile places the stone against reference samples from each country. Even then, about two to three percent of tested gems come back with no clear origin call (GIA, Gems & Gemology, Winter 2019).

Indicolite, or blue tourmaline, is the most common natural look-alike, but iron colors it instead of copper. At low saturation the two are hard to tell apart, although Paraiba tends to carry a "neon," lit-from-within glow that iron-based blue tourmaline does not match. Copper-doped glass is the other look-alike on the market: glass built to copy the color rather than tourmaline. Is Paraiba Tourmaline Treated, and What Should You Know About Its Grading?

Most Paraiba on the market is heat-treated to bring out its color, a practice as standard in the trade as oiling emerald or heating ruby. The trade asks for disclosure rather than an untreated stone.

Heat shifts manganese from one state (Mn3+) to another (Mn2+), cutting unwanted hues so the copper-driven blue and green show more clearly. Because the heat acts on manganese alone, the copper that carries the blue stays untouched. Heating often leaves no trace even under lab testing, so a report that cannot resolve the question records it in neutral terms. A disclosed treatment leaves the classification intact: the gem is copper-bearing elbaite before and after.

Clarity grading puts Paraiba in GIA's Type III class, where visible inclusions are normal and expected. Color saturation does more to shape how a stone looks on a hand, on a scale that runs from moderate to vivid with the "Windex blue" tag at the top. The grades describe what a gem is, while beauty remains a separate question: a vivid stone with visible inclusions can outshine a cleaner one with less color. A lapidary cuts each stone to its own rough: a shallow cut for dark material that needs light, a deep one for pale material that needs color. Paraiba is almost always custom-cut for that reason. Tourmaline's birefringence (0.013 to 0.024) often shows up as doubled facet edges at 10x, a marker that separates the real thing from glass.

Paraiba rates 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear in the right setting. It is softer than sapphire (9) and diamond (10), the two gems buyers most often weigh it against.

The Mohs scale ranks what marks what but says nothing about how a stone handles impact. A bezel or guarded prong reduces both risks: scratches from contact with harder stones and chips from a knock. A bezel wraps metal around the whole edge, while a prong setting with raised sides does much the same job. Pieces worn off the hand take less contact, so Paraiba tourmaline earrings and pendants tolerate a more open mount than a daily-wear ring does.

Paraiba tourmaline is well studied for a gem found within living memory. Its color agent (copper), its sources (four as of 2026), and its lab test (LA-ICP-MS trace-element analysis) all rest on published, peer-reviewed work rather than trade lore.
