January Birthstone Garnet: History, Variety & Color
Garnet is a group of six related minerals rather than a single stone, and the group produces orange, green, pink, purple-red and black as well as the dark red most people picture.
Blue is the only color garnet does not make. Every other hue turns up somewhere in the group.
Demantoid garnet splits white light into spectral color more strongly than diamond does. It came out of the Ural Mountains in the 1850s and has never been found in large sizes.
Bohemian pyrope supported a trade of roughly nine to ten thousand people by 1904. The stones were so small they were counted by the hundred, and they were set as dense pave.
Tsavorite is a green garnet found in Kenya around 1970 and named after Tsavo National Park. It is usually cleaner than emerald and it is never oiled.
Garnet is not a stone. It is a family of them, and the six minerals inside it produce orange, green, pink, black and a red dark enough to pass for ruby. The January birthstone garnet almost everyone pictures is that dark red, usually almandine or pyrope. It is one member of a group that also handed the nineteenth century a green stone with more fire than diamond. Roman writers had no way to separate garnet from ruby and filed them under one name. Bohemian cutters worked stones so small they counted them by the hundred. A geologist walked into a green grossular deposit in Kenya around 1970, and Tiffany named the result after a national park. All of that is garnet.
The group structure is the useful part, because it changes the questions. Hardness stops being one number and becomes a range from 6.5 to 7.5, which decides whether a stone belongs in a ring or in a pair of earrings. Color stops being a given and becomes a choice. And the test that separates garnet from ruby works because every garnet, orange or green or black, shares the same cubic crystal structure. Start with the family and the rest of it follows.
Why Is January Birthstone Garnet?
Garnet took January when the American National Retail Jewelers Association fixed the first standard American birthstone list in Kansas City in August 1912. It was not a contested slot. Garnet already held the month in the older European tradition, and it is one of only three stones on that list no later revision has touched.
The meeting solved a business problem. Every jeweler promoted a different set of monthly stones, and the trade wanted one reference. George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany's vice president, had laid the groundwork with Natal Stones in 1891 and published The Curious Lore of Precious Stones the year after the list appeared. He argued in print with several of the committee's choices. January was not one of them.
The list has been amended three times since. Alexandrite joined June and citrine joined November in 1952. Tanzanite joined December in 2002. Spinel joined August in 2016. January stayed garnet through all three, and so did July's ruby and February's amethyst. Britain adopted a separate list in 1937, gave January to garnet as well, and has never amended it. The Ayurvedic tradition agrees.
Garnet's older claim rests on unbroken use rather than on any one document. Roman rings with garnets in cup settings survive from the third and fourth centuries. Medieval bishops wore the stone before sapphire became the standard. The Canterbury Cathedral inventory of 1315 lists a pontifical ring set with four garnets, an emerald and four plasmas. A stone with that long a run was an easy pick for a committee that wanted one answer.
There is one real exception to the agreement. The Tibetan mystical list, which reached the West widely only in the 1980s, assigns emerald to January instead. Garnet's claim to the month is close to universal rather than absolute. The name is older than any of the lists. It comes from the Latin granatus, seeded, for the pomegranate, whose packed red seeds are the nearest thing in a kitchen to a pyrope pave. German still calls the stone Granat. Garnet marks the second wedding anniversary on the modern list. Is Garnet Always Red?
No. Garnet is a mineral group rather than a mineral, and its six species run orange, green, pink, purple-red, cinnamon and black. Blue is the only color the group does not produce. The dark red everyone knows is one branch of it.
The standard gemology text of 1904 put it plainly. Garnet is an isomorphous group sharing one general formula, where the metals swap in and out while the crystal keeps its shape. Every garnet crystallizes in the cubic system. The color is built into the chemistry rather than sitting in the stone as pigment. That is why garnet color runs so even from one side of a stone to the other.
The group splits into two chemical branches. The pyralspite branch has aluminium at its core and holds pyrope, almandine and spessartine. The ugrandite branch has calcium at its core and holds uvarovite, grossular and andradite. Most stones a buyer meets are blends between two species rather than one pure end member, which is why the trade names outnumber the mineral names.
Almandine is the dark red, often with a violet cast that older jewelers called columbine-red. It is the heaviest garnet and among the hardest, near 7.5. Under a lamp it warms toward orange, which is why it was never the first pick for candlelit rooms.
Pyrope is blood-red with a yellow undertone and never violet. Bohemia built an industry on it. Arizona and New Mexico produce it too, where it once sold as Arizona ruby, and the South African material that comes up alongside diamond went to market as Cape ruby.
Rhodolite sits between pyrope and almandine, roughly two parts to one. It is rose-red leaning purple, and it is lighter than most garnet, which is the point of it. A rhodolite holds its color at a size where almandine would go nearly black. The first stones came from Macon County, North Carolina.
Spessartine is manganese garnet, running orange to reddish-orange. The Namibian material sold as mandarin garnet is the top of it, a clean tangerine. Nigeria and Brazil supply most of the rest.
Grossular is the quiet species with the loudest members. Colorless at one end, it produces hessonite, the cinnamon stone Sri Lanka has shipped for centuries, and tsavorite, the green that gets its own section below.
Andradite produces demantoid, whose dispersion of 0.057 is higher than diamond's, and melanite, the black garnet Victorian jewelers used for mourning wear. Uvarovite is the emerald-green species that almost never occurs clear enough or large enough to cut, so it stays a collector's mineral.
Color-change garnet is the newest surprise in the group. Pyrope-spessartine blends from Madagascar and Kenya show teal in daylight and pinkish red under a lamp. Unlike alexandrite they are singly refractive, which is how a lab tells the two apart.
That spread explains the shape of Filigree's garnet jewelry. Dark red almandine and pyrope hold most of it. Add one very large spessartine, an emerald-cut rhodolite, and green tsavorite in two pieces.
How Can You Tell Garnet From Ruby?
Turn the stone so it reflects light straight back at you. A garnet goes black and opaque. A ruby holds its color and its transparency. That test is close to two centuries old and it still works as a first pass.
The mix-up is old, and it was fair. Theophrastus, writing around 300 BCE, put garnet and ruby together under anthrax, burning coal. He described the stone as showing the color of a live coal held up to the sun. Pliny did the same thing under carbunculus three and a half centuries later. One of the kinds he names, the Alabandine, was found at Orthosia and cut at Alabanda in Caria. That trade name is where the word almandine comes from.
The reflection test above is Hauy's, recorded by C.W. King in 1865. King added a second one: a garnet fuses easily into a dark iron-bearing globule, while a ruby only softens and comes back. Both are period tests for rough material and neither belongs anywhere near a set stone.
The modern tests are quick and they harm nothing. Garnet is cubic, so it is singly refractive, and a refractometer gives one reading. Ruby is doubly refractive and gives two. Garnet shows no dichroism either, where a ruby shifts color as you rotate it. Almandine adds its own signature. Dark absorption bands sit in the green part of the spectrum, and the 1904 text called them perfectly characteristic. They separate almandine from red spinel as well as from ruby.
Two more checks are worth carrying. Under ultraviolet light garnet stays inert while ruby glows orange-red. And garnet holds enough iron and manganese to answer a strong magnet, which the same period source noted for both almandine and hessonite. Ruby does not answer at all. Under magnification the inclusions differ too. Almandine often holds rutile needles that cross at 110 degrees. Russian demantoid holds golden horsetail fibers of chrysotile, so specific to that origin that they raise a stone's value rather than lower it.
Any one of these settles it. Together they make garnet one of the easier stones to place. It is worth placing, because a dark almandine in an old mount has been sold as ruby more than once. July's ruby covers the other side of the comparison.
How Did Jewelers Set Garnet From Georgian to Mid-Century?
Garnet has been set without a break for longer than any other stone on the birthstone calendar, and every era left a different construction behind. Sealed over foil in the Georgian period. Cut by the thousand and pave-set in the Victorian. Reduced to an accent stone after that, then picked up again by studio jewelers.
Before the Georgians. Garnet's early life is in seals and cloisonne rather than in gem settings. Hellenistic cutters worked it convex for signets, though the engraving on garnet ran below the standard set on hyacinth. Roman twin rings from the third and fourth centuries survive in the British Museum with garnets in cup settings. The Delos inventory of 279 BC already lists a gold ring set with an anthrax. The high point is Anglo-Saxon. The Sutton Hoo ship burial of about 625 CE holds a sword pommel, a sword harness and gold shoulder clasps. Each one is built from thin garnet wafers set into gold cells over patterned foil. No other early medieval cloisonne matches the work. Medieval records are thinner but exact. Pope Innocent III sent Richard I four symbolic rings in 1198, one of them garnet. The note that came with it said the warm color of the garnet showed how we should love.
Georgian (1714 to 1837). Garnet was the most democratic of Georgian gemstones, and the Georgian setting is why. Every stone sat in its own metal cup with the back sealed, usually over a sheet of bright foil, because the light in the room was candlelight. Garnet needed that more than most stones did. Streeter noted in 1877 that almandine gains nothing by candlelight and turns orange under it, which is exactly why Georgian jewelers reached for Bohemian pyrope in evening pieces. Dark cabochons were hollowed out underneath to let light through, a trick the Romans had already used, and the trade called the result a garnet shell. The surviving objects are specific. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a five-piece garnet parure from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, still in its original case. It also holds a garnet mourning ring signed by Elmkin Hitchcock and dated 1758. Very few Georgian pieces carry a maker's name at all. A silver and garnet brooch of about 1770 is there as well. The Smithsonian's serpent brooch of about 1780 uses cut garnets with turquoise cabochon eyes. Garnet also carried the G in the REGARD ring, where the first letters of ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby and diamond spelled the word.
Victorian (1837 to 1901). This is the era that made garnet ordinary, in the literal sense. Bohemian pyrope came out of weathered serpentine across the fields near Meronitz and Podsedlitz in the north of the country, and it came out small. Stones were graded by how many filled a loth, about sixteen grams: sixteens, thirty-twos, hundreds. Most of the production ran above five hundred stones to the loth. A pea-sized pyrope was uncommon and one the size of a hazelnut could take years between finds.
So the industry built its look around small stones. Pyrope was rose-cut and set as pave, claw-fixed over perforations in a metal plate, in dense unbroken fields of red, usually in low-karat gold. Kunz described Bohemian garnet rings as facetted, rose cut or cabochon garnets set in eight to fourteen karat gold, cut in Prague and the other Bohemian cities. By 1904 the trade centered on Turnov ran to close to nine or ten thousand people, with a government cutting school in the town.
That scale had a cost. Streeter, writing in 1877 from the middle of it, recorded that garnets "may be said to have quite gone out of fashion." A carbuncle the size of a half-crown had once been a serious purchase. Saturation and the Cape diamond flood arrived together.
Demantoid rescued the era's opinion of the stone from the other direction. Green andradite was found near Nizhny Tagil in the central Urals in 1853. The Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiold named it a year later, from the German demant, diamond, for what it does to light. A larger find in the late 1860s pushed it into the wider trade. Its dispersion of 0.057 is higher than diamond's, so a stone under a carat throws spectral color a much larger stone has no need to. Because the grains inside its nodules are tiny, demantoid was always an accent stone, and late Victorian makers used it as one. The Met holds a Jaques and Marcus brooch of about 1882 to 1892 combining demantoid with pearl and diamonds, and a Theodore B. Starr brooch of about 1900 setting demantoid green against amethyst purple. Melanite, the black species, worked the third Victorian job, serving mourning wear beside jet after 1861. Art Nouveau and Edwardian (1890 to 1915). Demantoid stayed the garnet of choice, and its job was to look alive. Faberge's workshops used it. So did American makers building dragonflies and flowers, where a demantoid eye set on a trembling spring did something a diamond could not. Charles Robert Ashbee led the English Arts and Crafts movement as a designer. His brooch of about 1900, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, sets a blister pearl with garnet and a brilliant-cut diamond. Edwardian high jewelry was platinum, diamonds and pearls, so garnet's work in those years happened in the handwork tradition running alongside it.
Art Deco through Mid-Century (1920 to 1970). Deco had little use for a stone that arrived in small odd pieces, and garnet left the fashionable center. It kept working in the American Arts and Crafts shops. Clara Barck Welles founded the Kalo Shop in Chicago in 1900, with five other women trained at the Art Institute. Its gold and garnet necklace of 1910 to 1920 is now at the Met. Kalo ran until 1970 on the motto beautiful, useful and enduring. The last chapter is British. Wendy Ramshaw built a garnet and carnelian ring set in 1971. It belongs to the modular ring-set form that put jewelry into galleries as sculpture. Her work sits in more than seventy public collections.
What Is Tsavorite Garnet?
Tsavorite is green grossular garnet, colored by vanadium and sometimes chromium, and it comes from East Africa. It looks like a good emerald and it behaves better than one. It is also the reason a garnet article cannot stop at red.
The find is recent and well recorded. Campbell Bridges, a Scottish geologist working in East Africa, found green grossular in the Taita-Taveta district of Kenya around 1970, following earlier Tanzanian material. William Larson of Pala International made the first large commercial purchase in 1973, from the Lualenyi Mine near Voi. Henry Platt of Tiffany named the stone after Tsavo National Park, and Tiffany pushed it hard in 1974. Fifty years is nothing in gemstone terms, which is part of why tsavorite is still unfamiliar to buyers who know emerald well.
Against emerald it wins on two counts and loses on one. Tsavorite is usually more transparent with fewer inclusions, and it is never oiled, because it has no need to be. Emerald's oil treatment exists to fill fractures tsavorite does not have. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it is harder than emerald and far less brittle. What makes an emerald fragile is its inclusions, not its hardness number. What emerald has is size. Fine tsavorite above three carats is uncommon, above five carats it is collector material, and the largest documented fine specimen is 16.67 carats.
The color comes from vanadium, which gives a slightly warmer, more yellow-green than chromium does at the same saturation. Every source is East African: Kenya, Tanzania around Merelani and in the Tunduru gravels, and Madagascar. There is no synthetic tsavorite and no treatment for it.
Demantoid is the other green garnet, and the two are not the same thing. Demantoid comes from andradite rather than grossular, sits softer at 6.5 to 7, and almost never appears above two carats. What it offers is fire. Tsavorite is the green garnet built for daily wear, which is why both of Filigree's tsavorite pieces are a marquise engagement ring and a channel-set eternity band. Is Garnet Durable Enough for an Engagement Ring?
For most of the group, yes. Almandine, pyrope, rhodolite, spessartine and tsavorite sit at 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is quartz territory and enough for daily wear in a sensible setting. Demantoid at 6.5 to 7 is the exception and belongs in earrings, pendants and brooches.
The blanket claim that garnet is too soft for an engagement ring treats a group of six minerals as one stone. Hardness inside the garnet group spans a full point on the Mohs scale, which is the same distance as the gap between emerald and topaz. One number cannot answer for all of it.
Hardness is only half the question anyway. No garnet has cleavage, so none of them will split along an internal plane the way a diamond or an emerald can. The fracture is conchoidal, which means the failure mode is a chip at an exposed edge after a hard knock rather than a break through the middle. The most common flaw in garnet is a fissure, and a fissured stone is weaker at the girdle than a clean one. Ask about fissures before you ask about hardness.
So the setting decides it. A bezel that wraps the girdle, or a low basket that keeps the stone close to the finger, takes the impact the stone cannot. High prongs holding a wide corner are the risk. That advice happens to be period-accurate, since Georgian and Victorian jewelers were already sealing garnet into closed cups for a completely different reason.
By category, the short version. Studs and drop earrings take almost no abuse and can hold any variety, demantoid included. Pendants are the same. Stacking rings with a flush or bezel-set stone are fine on a working hand. Cocktail rings with a large cabochon are safer than they look, because a dome has no edges to catch. Garnet engagement rings and eternity bands work well in almandine, rhodolite or tsavorite, and a channel-set band protects every stone in it by design. One more point in garnet's favor. It is among the least treated stones in the trade. No routine heat, no irradiation, no oil, no fracture filling as standard practice. The only recorded treatment is a metallic surface coating applied to some almandine-pyrope material, and it is rare. An antique garnet ring is almost certainly showing you the color the stone was cut with.
What Does Garnet Symbolize?
Constancy, friendship and fidelity, in the Victorian scheme most modern lists still copy. The sentiment has a specific source: the January verse Kunz printed in 1913, which had been circulating in jewelers' almanacs before he collected it.
The verse is worth quoting because everything else is downstream of it. No gems save garnets should be worn / By her who in this month is born; / They will insure her constancy, / True friendship and fidelity.
Kunz's January entry gives the month a full set. The guardian angel is Gabriel, the zodiac sign Aquarius, the flower the snowdrop. Garnet also carried the G in the REGARD acrostic, so a Victorian giving a garnet ring was often spelling a word rather than sending a symbol.
There is an older thread outside the Western tradition. Hessonite garnet, gomeda in Sanskrit, is one of the nine stones of the Hindu navaratna. It belongs to Rahu, the ascending lunar node. Jyotish ties that shadow planet to ambition, sudden change and odd paths. That is not a parallel drawn after the fact. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a navaratna-style choker made in 1937 or 1938. It sets hessonite garnets with rubies, sapphires and pearls in a Western Retro mount, with white sapphires standing in for diamond.
Older attributions stay attributions. Accounts describe Roman soldiers of the third and fourth centuries carrying garnet for protection and safe passage. A widely repeated tradition holds that Noah used a garnet as a light source aboard the Ark. Folklore compilations also record a claim that garnets served as ammunition, on the belief that they would wound worse than lead shot. Kunz's own index carries the same entry. The story was current in his day rather than invented since.
The most modern piece of garnet symbolism is not symbolism at all. Garnet fractures into hard, sharp, irregular grains, which makes it a working abrasive: sandpaper for bare wood, sanding belts and discs, and the cutting medium in water-jet machines. A stone that stands for constancy also cuts steel.

Garnet is the one birthstone whose name describes a family rather than a stone, and the family is more interesting than any single member of it. The same group gave the Georgians a foiled cabochon, gave Bohemia an industry, gave Russia a stone with more fire than diamond, and gave Kenya a green that beats emerald at everything except size. Is garnet a precious stone?
The precious and semi-precious split is a nineteenth-century trade habit rather than a gemological grade, and it files every garnet in the second category. Fine demantoid and fine tsavorite sit well above many stones on the other side of that line. Judge the individual stone instead.
Are there blue garnets?
No true blue garnet exists. Blue is the one color absent from the entire group. The nearest thing is color-change pyrope-spessartine from Madagascar and Kenya, which shows teal in daylight and turns pinkish red under incandescent light.
Is garnet the January birthstone in every tradition?
Almost. Garnet holds January in the modern American list, the older European tradition, the separate British list of 1937 and the Ayurvedic system. The Tibetan mystical list is the exception, assigning emerald to January instead.
What anniversary is garnet?
The second, on the modern anniversary list. Kunz's earlier scheme placed garnet at the eighteenth year, so older references and newer ones disagree about it.
