Every other outline is a fancy shape. Its report gives color, clarity, and carat weight, then leaves the quality of the cutting to direct assessment.
GIA puts a well-proportioned oval or pear between 1.3 and 1.4 to one, long enough to stretch the finger without looking stretched.
The modern cushion comes straight down from the Old Mine cut, which a GIA report still classifies as a Cushion Modified Brilliant.
Three of these shapes have a named inventor and a date: Joseph Asscher in 1902, Lazare Kaplan in 1957, Henry Grossbard in 1977.
Diamond shape is the outline of a stone viewed from above. Diamond cut is how well the facets beneath that outline were proportioned and finished. The distinction matters because GIA grades cut for one shape only. Marcel Tolkowsky calculated the round brilliant's proportions in 1919, and that standardization is what makes a grade possible. What's the Difference Between Diamond Shapes and Diamond Cut?
Shape is the outline visible looking down at a stone. Cut is how well the facets underneath were worked. The round brilliant is the only shape that receives an official grade for it.
Shape is the simpler of the two. Round, oval, square, and pear are identifiable from across a table. Cut happens underneath: the angles and proportions that decide how light enters a stone, travels inside it, and returns to the eye. Two of the shape names conflate the two. Emerald and princess each name an outline and a facet style at the same time, which is where most of the confusion about the distinction begins.
GIA grades cut from Excellent to Poor, and only for round brilliants. GIA states the reason. The round brilliant is the only shape with a standardized facet arrangement, carrying 57 or 58 facets. The flat top is the table. The crown slopes down from it to the girdle, the thin band around the widest part of the stone. Below the girdle sits the pavilion, tapering toward a point. On a 58-facet stone that point is clipped flat into a culet. Every round brilliant is built to the same template. One can therefore be measured against another.
A fancy shape offers no such template. A princess cut alone can be built with 58 facets or with 76, depending on the cutter. Ovals, marquises, and hearts vary more than that. Nothing fixed exists to grade against. No cut grade is issued for any of them. Fancy is trade shorthand for the outline rather than a comment on quality. A poorly cut round brilliant is a poorly cut diamond, and a beautifully cut pear is a beautifully cut diamond.
The practical consequence is what carries. On a fancy shape the report gives color, clarity, and carat weight, then stops. Craftsmanship has to be assessed directly. Two older cuts sit outside this system entirely. The Old Mine cut and the Old European cut were standard long before Tolkowsky ran his numbers. Why Is the Round Brilliant the Only Shape with a GIA Cut Grade?
The round brilliant is the only shape cut to a fixed template. A grading scale requires something repeatable to measure against, and Tolkowsky's 1919 proportions gave every round brilliant the same facets in the same places.
Tolkowsky was a Belgian-British mathematician, 21 years old, when he published Diamond Design: A Study of the Reflection and Refraction of Light in a Diamond. The subtitle describes the method. He treated a diamond as an optics problem and solved it on paper. His figures set the crown angle near 34.5 degrees, the pavilion angle near 40.75 degrees, and the table at a little over half the width of the stone. Those proportions balance brilliance, the white light a stone returns, against fire, the flashes of color it splits out. A century later they remain the reference a round brilliant is measured against.
That template is what makes a grade possible. GIA weighs brightness, the white light a stone returns, then fire, the light it breaks into spectral color, then scintillation, the flicker produced as the stone or the light source moves. It then checks weight ratio, durability, polish, and symmetry. All of it resolves to one word from Excellent to Poor. The laboratory can do that because it knows what the stone in front of it was intended to be. An oval has no intended template. The grade stops at round for a structural reason.

Light reflects off so many small surfaces that faint body color and small inclusions have less room to show. That makes the round brilliant the most forgiving shape. What Makes an Oval Diamond Look Larger Than a Round of the Same Weight?
An oval spreads its weight sideways rather than down. More of the stone faces the viewer. An oval and a round of the same carat weight rarely look the same size on a hand.
Cutters had worked rough into oval outlines for centuries. The modern oval is a specific and recent design. Lazare Kaplan built it in 1957, using techniques refined with his uncle Abraham Tolkowsky, a relative of the man who calculated the round brilliant. Kaplan's achievement was fitting a full brilliant facet pattern into a stretched outline. The stone kept its light return while gaining length. Tiffany & Co., Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels were setting his ovals within a few years.
Length is the shape's purpose. It stretches the finger and occupies more room on the hand than its weight suggests. The trade-off is the bow-tie effect, a dark shadow shaped like a bow tie lying across the middle of the stone. It appears when light does not return evenly through the center of the stone, and the viewer's own head blocking light is part of the cause. A faint bow-tie is normal and occurs in almost every oval. A heavy one that dominates the face of the stone is a proportion problem. No setting corrects it.
Length-to-width ratio is the other measure. GIA puts a well-proportioned oval between 1.3 and 1.4 to one. Shorter than that and the stone begins to read as almost round. What Is a Cushion Cut Diamond?
A cushion is a square or rectangular diamond with rounded corners, shaped like a pillow. Two very different facet styles share the name.
The outline is not a modern idea. It descends directly from the Old Mine cut, the standard from the 1700s into the late 1800s, before machine precision arrived. Old Mine stones were cut by hand from Brazilian rough. The name distinguishes those old mines from the South African production that followed. Modern cushions divide into two types. The difference is the length of the star facets on the pavilion. A chunky cushion keeps them long. Its facets are large enough to distinguish from across a room. It returns broad, slow flashes. A crushed ice cushion shortens those star facets sharply. Light returns in hundreds of small pieces with no followable pattern, closer to glitter than to flash. Neither is the better stone. They differ enough that two cushions of the same weight can read as two separate shapes, which makes the facet style worth identifying before comparing stones on weight.
Cushions often carry more of their weight below the girdle than other shapes do, so two stones of equal weight can differ in how large they appear face-up. What Is an Emerald Cut Diamond?
The emerald cut is a rectangular step cut. Its long parallel facets flash in broad flat planes instead of scattering light into sparkle.
Brilliant cuts and step cuts are two different pieces of engineering. A brilliant cut, such as the round or the oval, uses small triangular and kite-shaped facets to break light into fire and scintillation. A step cut runs long, open, parallel facets down toward the culet, like stairs. The result is described as a hall of mirrors: wide planes of light sliding across the stone as the hand moves, rather than pinpoint sparkle. The cut was developed for emeralds first. Emerald is a brittle stone. The shape, with its cropped corners, reduced pressure on the material during cutting. Diamonds received it later.
Open facets conceal nothing. An inclusion that would disappear into the busy pattern of a brilliant cut sits in plain view in an emerald cut. Body color behaves the same way. That is the operative trade. An emerald cut requires a better clarity grade and a better color grade than a brilliant-cut stone of the same size, because a flaw or a tint has nowhere to go. In practice that means moving up the clarity scale rather than accepting an SI grade that would read as clean in a round. A report can state where an inclusion sits. It cannot state whether the inclusion will be visible across a dinner table.

What Is an Asscher Cut Diamond?
The Asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners. Joseph Asscher patented it in 1902, the first diamond cut ever granted a patent.
The original design carried 58 step-cut facets. Asscher gave it a small table, a high crown, and a steep pavilion, then cropped the corners hard enough that the outline reads as octagonal from above. Those choices produce a specific effect. Viewed straight down, the facets draw the eye toward the center in a set of receding squares, with an X pattern across the table where the corner facets meet. The result has depth rather than fizz. It resembles a round brilliant in no respect.
The cut found its moment in the Art Deco years, when precision counted for more than ornament. Its geometry suited the period closely enough that the two are difficult to separate now, and a patent-era Asscher is one of the more recognizable Art Deco stones.
Almost a century after the patent, the family revised it. Edward and Joop Asscher, Joseph's great-grand-nephews, added 16 facets for a total of 74 and called it the Royal Asscher, cut to echo the Cullinan II. Both versions behave as step cuts. Nothing is concealed. A tint or an inclusion has no busy facet pattern to disappear into, which is why clarity and color carry more weight here than in any brilliant shape.

What Is a Princess Cut Diamond?
The princess cut is a square brilliant. Its modern form arrived in stages. The version sold today dates to about 1979.
The abbreviated history credits the 1960s. The full account involves three sets of hands. A London cutter named Arpad Nagy designed the Profile cut in 1961. Basil Watermeyer patented the related Barion cut in 1971, which solved how to carry brilliant faceting into a square outline. Betzalel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz then developed and commercialized the square modified brilliant in use now, in Israel around 1979 and 1980. They sold it as the Quadrillion, at 49 facets. The name did not persist. The shape did. The current version runs closer to 76 facets.
Underneath, it is a brilliant cut in a square outline. The same light-scattering geometry a round brilliant uses is rearranged to fill corners rather than a circle. Facet counts vary widely from cutter to cutter. That variation is part of why no laboratory grades the shape, and part of why two princess cuts of the same weight can behave differently in the same room.
The corners require planning. They are the most exposed points on the stone and the easiest to chip against a doorframe or a countertop. What Is a Marquise Diamond?
The marquise is the longest of the standard shapes, pointed at both ends. It shows more surface for its weight than nearly any other shape available.
Its origin story is unverified. According to a tale repeated for two centuries, Louis XV asked his cutters for a diamond shaped like the mouth of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. No document from the period supports it, and the sources that examine it closely hedge with "legend has it" and "allegedly." The account is court legend rather than history.
What the shape does is not in dispute. Two points and a long body spread a diamond's weight across more visible surface than a round, an oval, or a cushion of the same carat weight. A marquise therefore needs its tips protected. A V-prong at each end is the standard answer. Symmetry counts for more here than in almost any other shape, because an uneven side or a point sitting off center is visible at a glance. Sighting down the length of the stone is the check. What Is a Pear Shaped Diamond?
A pear is a brilliant cut with one rounded end and one point. It provides a marquise's length in a softer outline.
The pear divides the difference between the two shapes on either side of it. One end is the curve of a round brilliant. The other narrows to a single point, as a marquise does. The facet pattern is the brilliant one. Light behaves more as it does in a round than in a step cut.
The ratio guidance matches that for ovals. GIA puts a well-proportioned pear between 1.3 and 1.4 to one. Shorter than that and it begins to read as off-round. Longer and it becomes hard to source. The bow-tie appears in pears as well, usually as a soft shadow near the middle. A well-cut stone keeps it faint.
Symmetry is where a pear succeeds or fails. The two curved sides should mirror each other, and the point should sit centered against the round end rather than off to one side. Asymmetry in a pear is straightforward to identify once known. It remains visible afterward. Comparing two on a hand and sighting down the length of each is the test.
Orientation is a matter of preference. Point toward the fingertip is the common choice and stretches the finger further. Point toward the wrist reads as less expected and suits a wider band. What Is a Radiant Cut Diamond?
The radiant puts a full brilliant facet pattern inside an emerald cut's outline. Henry Grossbard worked out how to do it in 1977.
Grossbard had been cutting diamonds for thirty years by then. He wanted an emerald cut's clean geometry without giving up a round brilliant's light return. The two had never been combined in one stone. He spent two months on the problem, experimenting on real rough rather than on paper. The result was the first square or rectangular cut with a complete brilliant facet pattern on both the crown and the pavilion, 70 facets in total. It was also among the first patents ever issued for a diamond cut.
The extra facets do measurable work. A radiant returns noticeably more light than an emerald or an Asscher of similar proportions. That busier pattern performs the same forgiving function a round brilliant does, concealing small inclusions and softening faint tint. A radiant can carry a slightly lower clarity or color grade without it showing.
The corners are the other consideration. Grossbard trimmed them the way an emerald cut is trimmed. That leaves a radiant considerably more durable than a princess cut of the same size. For a square or rectangular stone intended for heavy daily wear, it is the most forgiving of the group.

How Do You Choose the Right Diamond Shape?
No shape is objectively better than the others. The decision runs on three criteria: facet style, proportion against the hand, and durability in daily wear.
The first is brilliant against step. Brilliant cuts scatter light into small bright flashes, and round, oval, cushion, princess, marquise, pear, and radiant all work that way. Step cuts trade sparkle for wide planes and clean geometry, and only two appear here: emerald and Asscher. Most preferences fall clearly on one side. Settling that question first eliminates more than half the field.
The second is proportion against the hand. Elongated outlines, including oval, marquise, pear, and emerald, stretch the finger. Round and square outlines sit differently on it. No pairing is correct in the abstract. The comparison takes seconds: two candidates on the same finger, viewed at arm's length. Photographs flatten these differences.
The third is durability. Pointed corners chip, and princess, marquise, and pear are the shapes that have them. Round, oval, and cushion outlines have nothing to catch. A protective setting closes most of that gap without eliminating the underlying difference. It remains a real factor for anyone who gardens, climbs, cooks heavily, or leaves rings on at the sink.
