What qualifies as a "true" padparadscha depends on which lab you ask. Kashmir set the standard and remains the rarest source. The large majority of commercial sapphires are heat-treated. The Rockefeller Sapphire (62.02 carats, Burma) was acquired in 1934 by John D. Rockefeller Jr. from an Indian maharaja. It has been recut and remounted multiple times since, most recently set in a Tiffany and Co.-signed ring. Its provenance, spanning a maharaja's collection, an American industrial dynasty, and one of the world's most recognized jewelry houses, is a compact history of how major sapphires change hands across generations and cultures.

Two sapphires sit in the Imperial State Crown of the United Kingdom. St. Edward's Sapphire, in the topmost cross, is believed to have been set in Edward the Confessor's coronation ring in 1042, recovered at his 1163 reinterment, and survived the English Civil War before Victoria placed it in the crown. The Stuart Sapphire (approximately 104 carats), mounted at the back of the crown, was smuggled out of England by James II when he fled in 1688, eventually returned via George III, and was moved to the crown's back in 1909 to make room for the newly cut Cullinan II diamond. The crown itself contains 17 sapphires alongside approximately 2,868 diamonds, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls, and 4 rubies.

A sapphire signet of Roman Emperor Constantius II (317 to 361 CE), weighing 54.40 metric carats and engraved with the emperor spearing a boar, survives in the historical record. It confirms that sapphire was being cut, polished, and set in working jewelry nearly two thousand years before the modern gem trade existed.

And there is the stone everyone knows. The 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire in Princess Diana's engagement ring, chosen in 1981 and now worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales, is not the largest or the rarest sapphire in the world. But it is the one that settled the question of whether a sapphire could anchor an engagement ring with the same cultural weight as a diamond.
