About
Vintage Engagement Rings
Q: Why do some vintage engagement rings cost less than comparable modern rings?
Several factors work in buyers' favor. Vintage rings don't carry the retail markup chain of a newly manufactured ring (mining, cutting, manufacturing, wholesale, retail). The stones were already cut, the metal was already refined. Additionally, older diamond cuts like old European and old mine cuts receive lower GIA cut grades than modern rounds because the grading scale is built around modern proportions, which can suppress prices even though the stones are visually striking. That said, rare or exceptional vintage pieces — large old European cuts in platinum Art Deco settings, for example — can command premiums well above equivalent modern rings.
Q: What is the difference between vintage and antique engagement rings?
In the jewelry industry, "antique" technically means over 100 years old and "vintage" means at least 20-50 years old, depending on who's defining it. In practice, the terms overlap constantly, and most buyers use them interchangeably. What matters more than the label is whether the ring is an authentic period piece or a modern reproduction made to look old. Everything in this collection is authentic. We date each ring to its era of origin and describe it accordingly.
Q: Are vintage engagement rings durable enough for everyday wear?
Yes, with a few caveats. Platinum and gold are inherently durable metals, and a well-made ring from the 1920s can hold up as well as one made last year. The variables are the condition of the prongs (which hold the center stone in place) and the thickness of the shank (the band). We inspect and restore both before listing any ring. Prongs get retipped or rebuilt, thin shanks get reinforced. That said, some design elements are more delicate by nature — Edwardian rings with fine filigree openwork are sturdier than they look, but they're not the same as a solid platinum solitaire. We'll tell you what to expect from any ring you're considering.
Q: Can vintage engagement rings be resized?
Most can, within a range of about 1-2 sizes up or down. The limiting factors are the design of the shank and the metal type. Simple bands are straightforward. Rings with engraving, filigree, channel-set stones, or eternity-style settings around the full band are harder to resize without affecting the design. Platinum and gold both resize well. We do sizing in-house and can tell you before purchase what's realistic for a specific ring.
Q: How do I know if a vintage engagement ring is authentic?
Start with the seller. A jeweler who specializes in vintage should be able to tell you the approximate era of origin, the construction methods used, and whether any components have been replaced or modified. Specific things to ask about: Is the center stone original to the ring? Have the prongs or head been replaced? Has the ring been re-shanked? At Filigree, we document all of this. We also carry GIA-certified stones where certification exists, and we can walk you through the physical markers — construction technique, metal composition, stone cutting style — that place a ring in its historical period.
