Jewelry Tips
  • HOW TO CLEAN YOUR JEWELRY

Your jewelry is happiest (and shiniest) when it’s clean. Most gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap (no detergents) and a soft toothbrush. Rinse your jewelry in a glass of water to remove cleaning solutions so you don’t risk losing loose stones or an entire piece of jewelry to the sink drain. Soft gems like pearls can scratch easily so use a new, clean makeup brush and warm, soapy water to softly clean them

  • WHERE TO STORE YOUR JEWELRY

Jewelry likes to be treated with respect. When you’re not wearing your baubles it’s best to keep them in a jewelry box, pouch or tray to keep them safe. It’s ideal to store them in something with partitions to ensure they don’t get scratched by other gems or metals. If you make it a part of your routine to store your jewelry in the same place everyday then you’ll always know where it is when it’s not adorning you.

  • WHAT TO AVOID

Jewelry doesn’t like anything that dulls its luster and shine so avoid coming into contact with damaging chemicals while wearing it. Fine jewelry should be removed before using household cleaners. Many of these cleaners contain ammonia, which can be too harsh for many gems and vintage jewelry. Chlorine bleach, another common household cleaner, can pit or damage gold alloys. Even everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfume or other cosmetics can contain chemicals that will damage the surface of delicate or porous gems (like turquoise & pearls).

  • WHEN NOT TO WEAR YOUR JEWELRY

Some of the activities that keep you looking and feeling your best can have the opposite effect on your jewelry. Don’t wear your fine jewelry when swimming, doing yoga, rock climbing or other strenuous physical activities. Your glamorous pieces also do not respond well to being included in your chores. Take your jewelry off before you wash dishes, work in the garden or haul rocks. It’s also best to give your jewelry a rest while you sleep. To avoid bending metal or loosening settings take your pieces off before bed and keep them stored carefully overnight.

Antique and Vintage pieces were constructed differently than modern jewelry is today. It is important to understand that you are enjoying an item that is anywhere from 50 to 130 years old. Our pieces are ready for daily wear, however, as with all jewelry if you are working out, gardening, cooking or participating in sports we encourage you to remove it to help further its longevity.
