Four Somethings

This is the first line of a traditional Victorian English rhyme, which details what a bride should wear at her wedding for good luck.

 “Something old,

something new,

something borrowed,

something blue,

and a silver sixpence in her shoe.”

 

It is often refereed to as a bride’s “four somethings”. Though the first four items are traditionally always included. the “silver six-pence in your shoe” is often left out except in Britain. Maybe it is because many brides don’t make it the whole evening with their own shoes on, even without the coin. The four items of the “four somethings” are the four objects that a bride adds to her wedding ensemble or brings with her on her wedding day. Traditionally, each is a small token given to her by a close family member, friend or bridesmaid. As it has been adapted to more modern weddings, the “four somethings” are also items chosen by the bride, which have significance in her and her husband-to-be’s life together. 

 

With regards to the meanings of each of the “four somethings” each serves as a different representation of good luck for the bride on the big day. Something old represents the continuity between her life up to now and the exciting future she and her partner are beginning together. Something new represents optimism and confidence for the couple’s future and happiness. Something borrowed is a symbol of the borrowed happiness of one’s close friends and family celebrating their wedding together. Something blue stands for sanctity of love and the fidelity the bride and groom find in one another. As for the “silver sixpence in your shoe” it is a wish of good tidings for their growth together. The fun part of the “four somethings” is that they can be anything, as their significance is in the eye of the bride.
