How to Clean Your Engagement Ring At Home.

May 25, 2016 at 11:20 PM

How often do you look at your engagement ring and think, ”This really needs a cleaning?” Unfortunately, with our busy lives, our jewelry is constantly accumulating gunk: Soap residue, hair products, lotions and the grime that comes from daily wear. Since it’s hard to find time to stop by and have us professionally clean your jewelry, what you need is a solution that can deal with each of those issues at home. And since we’re guessing you don’t have a Ultra Sonic Agitator or an Industrial Steamer in your bathroom, how do you get the most sparkle from your fine jewelry? Here is our homemade recipe and technique for cleaning your diamond and harder gemstone jewelry* (sapphires, rubies, tourmalines, etc.) at home. Firstly, here are the things you’ll need:

1.) A Medium Size Bowl or Container

2.) A Fine Strainer (The Mesh Variety, Not a Perforated Pasta Strainer)

3.) Hot Water

4.) A Grease Cutting Dish Soap (Dawn, Palmolive, etc.) Regular hand soap works, but not as well.

5.) Ammonia Glass Cleaner (Windex)

6.) A Soft Bristle Toothbrush. Store-Bought or Up-Cycled from Use.

7.) 10-15 Minutes

First things first, if you’re doing this in or near the sink, STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND PUT THE STRAINER PLUG IN. You’re looking for a glistening gem, not a frantic service call to the plumber. Gather the items above and start running the sink water hot. Hot people, not scalding. Fill your bowl halfway with hot water and then add several drops of dish detergent (three or four is usually good). Now add two tablespoons of Windex. Mix the solution together and place your jewelry into it. Let it have a good soak for several minutes. Remember the commercial where they put the dirty lasagna pan in the sink with soap and and then ten minutes later it wipes clean? That’s what we’re working towards. Now we need to get into the crevices and under your diamonds where the gunk really gathers. A soft bristle toothbrush is perfect. Firm, but gentle. If you use one, the ideal toothbrush is an old head on a sonic or electric one. That way, you’ve worn down the bristles so they’re nice and soft, while the sonic action breaks away the little particles just like a mini sonic bath at the jewelry store. DID YOU PUT THE STRAINER PLUG IN? JUST CHECKING. After a through and gentle scrubbing, give each piece a good rinse of hot water in your strainer. Lastly, pour out onto a soft cloth and pat dry. Voila! Clean and sparkly jewelry. Put it on and enjoy the day!

*Note: There are several jewelry items that don’t favor this method: Emeralds, Pearls, Opals and other softer, porous items. These gemstones should be rinsed, not soaked, in lukewarm water and then pated dry directly after. If there is excessive gunk, gently scrub each with a toothbrush (Turn off the sonic). For pearls, wipe each pearl with a warm wash cloth to remove anything on the surface and lay on a cloth to dry. Most pearl strands are strung with silk and too much water and then being hung to dry will stretch out the silk.
